An exposed-aggregate surface is obtained by placing concrete and then removing the top layer of cement paste to uncover decorative colored stones. Its durability and skid resistance, an exposed aggregate finish is ideal for most flatwork including:
An exposed-aggregate finish is also possible on concrete walls such as retaining walls for a modern decorative look.
Once the concrete has been placed and leveled with the proper slopes for water drainage, the concrete surface is applied with a surface retarder which slows the top layer from hardening. Depending on the weather and time of day, a layer of plastic may be topped on the concrete after the retarder application. If same-day washing, no plastic will be applied. When the concrete is ready to be washed off, a pressure washer or garden hose will be used to was off the retarder to expose the top layer of concrete and reveal the colorful stones.

FAQ FOR
EXPOSED
AGGREGATE
Exposed aggregate concrete has many advantages. It is highly durable, easy to maintain, non-slip, and weather resistant. Exposed aggregate concrete also has the benefit of being visually attractive, with an extensive range of colors and textures to choose from.
Exposed aggregate concrete is durable and long-wearing. An exposed aggregate driveway can last up to 30 years with the right care and maintenance. Exposed aggregate concrete, when used around swimming pools can be lower depending on the chemicals used in your pool but can still be expected to last 15-20 years or longer with proper care.
Exposed aggregate is created by washing back the top layer of concrete to expose the decorative substrate, creating a detailed, textured finish. This process allows for an aesthetically pleasing result that also makes the concrete highly durable and non-slip. Exposed aggregate is available in a range of colors and textures depending on your needs and preferences.
Yes, exposed aggregate concrete should be sealed to protect it from damage, stains, and wear and tear. A sealant will also enhance the appearance of your concrete, highlighting the color and texture and providing a finished appearance.
Yes, you can. It is not suggested though. Buying big box store sealer brands can be risky if the sealer fails or discolors(turns yellow). This can be costly and loss of time trying to remove the sealer as it is a big process.
You should always hire a professional to seal your concrete and get it done properly, plus it is usually guaranteed!
It is generally recommended to reseal your pad every 1 – 2 years for best results. How often you reseal will be impacted by a number of factors including the original sealant used, the amount of wear and tear the driveway is subject to, and the weather conditions. The more effectively the initial sealant is applied, the less subsequent sealant it should require so it is a good idea to use a reputable concreting company to install your exposed aggregate pad.
One of the benefits of exposed aggregate is that it does not require extensive maintenance to retain its appearance. It is recommended to keep your driveway or outdoor area clean by sweeping or hosing it down regularly. For more stubborn stains such as oil or tire marks, cleaning with a high-pressure washer using hot water and a degreaser is effective. Exposed aggregate will also need to be resealed every few years to continue to protect the surface.
Exposed aggregate concrete is more expensive than standard broom textured concrete due to the additional materials, labor, and expertise in the technique required to achieve a high-quality finish. The cost of concreting services will also vary depending on the contractor you engage for your project, the quality of the materials used, and their level of experience. There are many advantages of exposed aggregate concrete that are not achieved with plain concrete so your overall cost should also be considered in conjunction with the results you hope to achieve.
Our standard slab thickness is a minimum of four inches. Some situations will require us to pour six inches of concrete, and this would be discussed before the project takes place.
Yes, you can drive on stamped concrete. We recommend waiting at least seven days (although, 28 days is very recommended) of cure time after new concrete is placed before vehicles are allowed to drive on it.
Exposed aggregate is easy to maintain. Regular sweeping or rinsing down with a hose will stop dirt from building up and prevent stains from sinking into the concrete. For a deeper clean a high-pressure washer can be used with hot water and a degreasing agent to remove stubborn stains such as oil or tire marks.
Exposed aggregate is ideal for commercial projects. It is durable and long-lasting and is able to hold up under high traffic from people or vehicles. It is low maintenance so is perfect for large areas including schools, offices, public facilities, and more.
